2024 Maryland Association of Counties Summer Conference
In mid-August, I attended the 2024 Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) Summer Conference at the Roland Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Worcester County. Nearly 2,000 local, state, and federal government employees and officials went “down the ocean” for 4 days of agency briefings, organization meetings, and regional county meetings, as well as MACo committee meetings.
The conference also offers approximately 30 continuing education sessions and dozens of informative speakers from the public and private sectors. A highlight of the week is a trade show featuring over 250 commercial, state, and county services and products that help Counties deliver services to their residents.
2024 Democratic National Convention
In late August, I was honored and privileged to attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention in my hometown of Chicago. Though I didn’t get to dine at my favorite restaurant, it was an incredible experience reconnecting with friends and family and making new acquaintances, all united in enthusiasm for the future.
I was a proud Marylander when Prince George's County Executive and Democratic Nominee for the U.S. Senate Angela Alsobrooks took the stage on Tuesday night and Governor Wes Moore on Wednesday night. A personal highlight was meeting former Chicago Bull, current Golden State Warriors Head Coach and Coach of the 2024 Gold Medal-winning Men’s Olympic Basketball Team, Steve Kerr, who also spoke at the Convention.

The Pumphrey Day Parade
On August 3, I celebrated Pumphrey Day and attended the parade in Brooklyn Park. It was great spending time with friends, family, and neighbors at this fun (and annual!) community event. The day was packed full of entertainment and experiences, including the parade, talented and local craft vendors, food from surrounding small businesses, and pageant showcases! These festivities allowed the community to celebrate its heritage and exhibit its thriving merchants and strong community.
If you're unfamiliar with Pumphrey, it's a community at the northern edge of Anne Arundel County between Linthicum and Brooklyn Park. Its name derives from Walter Pumphrey, a Quaker who emigrated from England and moved to the Baltimore area in 1708 to provide carpentry services to the many Quakers in the city. He purchased property throughout northern Anne Arundel County for a source of wood. A section of marshland in the area between what is now Linthicum and Pumphrey was known for some time as "Pumphrey's Swamp."
Celebrating Pumphrey’s growth and history was such an honor and I’m already looking forward to Pumphrey Day next year!
Anne Arundel County Public Schools Back to School Program
It’s only July, but in Anne Arundel County we’re already planning for the new school year. You can help kids get off to a strong start by participating in the Back to School Program, which is a partnership between the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services (DSS) and Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
For more than 30 years, we have assisted elementary school children from low-income families begin the school year with supplies to be successful in school. Over 22,000 children in Anne Arundel County qualify for Federal Lunch assistance, an indication that the children’s families are low income.
Here’s how the program works:
Eligible students are referred to the program by school guidance counselors and DSS social workers.
Donors (individuals, churches, organizations and businesses) are matched with children in need of school supplies and are provided a list of the required supplies. The donors purchase supplies and backpacks and deliver the items to the Office of School Counselor at the elementary schools the 2nd week in August.
On average, school supplies cost between $50 and $75, depending upon the child’s grade in school.
How To Help:
Simply fill out the donor form and we'll contact you with the name of a child you can help. For more information, contact the Volunteer Office at (410) 269-4462.

Aaliyah Day
On July 2nd, I had the opportunity to attend Redirecting Our Culture’s “Aaliyah Day,” a celebration to remember and honor the life of Aaliyah Gonzalez. July 2nd marked one year since the worst mass shooting in Baltimore’s 300-year history. The mass shooting in Brooklyn ended with over 25 people injured and two fatalities, one of them being Aaliyah Gonzalez. Redirecting Our Culture was created in the wake of the shooting by Aaliyah’s mother, Krystal Gonzalez. Its mission is to restore respect, pride, and dignity to the community in an effort to curb future violence.
I was honored to join Aaliyah’s family and friends and learn more about her too-short life and the memories of those who loved her. Aaliyah was an 18-year-old recent high school graduate who had plans to attend college. The investigation into the murders of Aaliyah Gonzalez and Kylis Fagbemi, the second victim, is ongoing.

Children of Fallen Patriots Event
I was honored to provide remarks at the Children of Fallen Patriots event hosted in Washington, DC, by PepsiCo/Rolling Remembrance in mid-May. We honored the brave children who have lost a parent in military service and paid tribute to their strength and resilience despite facing unimaginable loss.
From the Fallen Patriots website:
First started by PepsiCo in 2015, Rolling Remembrance is a 14,000+ mile long relay of an American flag from Seattle to New York to benefit the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation. Using normal business routes, PepsiCo's extensive network of U.S. Military Veteran drivers will pass off a flag to each other at different relay points. The flag was on a UH-60M Blackhawk Helicopter on a combat mission in support of U.S. and Coalition ground forces in the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012. The Rolling Remembrance campaign occurs during April, Month of the Military Child and May, Military Appreciation Month.
Successful Ferndale Day
Ferndale Day was a great success, bringing the community together in celebration on May 18th! The day featured a fun parade, lots of delicious food, live entertainment, and engaging activities for the kids. Friends and neighbors came out in full force to enjoy the spirit of this amazing community, making Ferndale Day an unforgettable experience for all.
Lake Shore Peninsula Community Concerns
I was happy to meet with community members in May to better understand their concerns regarding the possible rezoning and development of land along Mountain Road on the Lake Shore Peninsula. Protect Our Lake Shore Peninsula is a group of dedicated local residents from the Lake Shore and Pasadena areas who wish to preserve the remaining ecosystem and ensure the safety of residents on the peninsula next to the Chesapeake Bay.
Celebrate Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news of freedom. Over 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became Juneteenth or Freedom Day. You can celebrate Juneteenth in Annapolis on June 21st and 22nd with a festive parade, entertainment on two stages, delicious food, and a fireworks finale! Find more information HERE.
Celebrating our Future Service Members
We had a great turnout at Glen Burnie High School to celebrate our future service members–high school seniors who have chosen to enlist in the armed forces. On April 29th, Our Community Salutes honored almost 50 Class of 2024 students from Anne Arundel County Public Schools for their commitment to military service. Our Community Salutes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides support and resources to the newest and youngest service members and their families. Congratulations to the high school seniors who took their Oath of Enlistment, and thank you for your service to our country!

6th Annual Parren J. Mitchell Dinner
I was absolutely honored to perform Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” at the 6th Annual Parren J. Mitchell dinner. Congressman Parren J. Mitchell was the first African American elected to Congress to represent the state of Maryland, and attendees had a wonderful time celebrating his life and legacy. We celebrated with two Anne Arundel County Public School seniors who received the annual Parren J. Mitchell scholarship awards. Congratulations to Mathea T. Abriara of Meade High School and Tobias Griffin of Old Mill High School!
The Divine 9 at the Annapolis MLK Parade
The Divine Nine refers to a collection of nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). This group holds a significant role in Black American history and culture and boasts nearly 4 million members. For many Black students, these organizations are more than just classmates-they are community and family. Members go on to selflessly serve their communities in many ways, and I am proud to be part of this family. On April 13th, we enjoyed being part of the festivities at the Annapolis Martin Luther King Jr. Parade!
AANHPI Heritage Month
Each May, we commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, honoring the lasting impact of generations of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders on American history, society, and culture. North County High School Improvements
I gathered with Anne Arundel County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell, Senator Pam Beidle, Delegate Mark Chang, County Executive Steuart Pittman, Board of Education President Robert Silkworth, Principal Sara Thomas, and Athletic Director Ryan Aleardi on April 24th to celebrate the completion of more than $4 million in improvements to the North County High School campus. Through state funding, the school now has a second turf field and a new field house for its athletic teams.
Collaboration is Key
When state and county organizations work collaboratively, we have a much better chance of addressing issues in our area and finding effective solutions. In early April, Secretary Jake Day from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) visited Anne Arundel County as part of a state-wide tour to understand the unique needs of various Maryland communities. County Executive Steuart Pittman, Councilmembers Allison Pickard, Julie Hummer, Lisa Rodvien, and I joined local leaders to accompany Secretary Day on a tour of our communities. Following the tour, we had a productive roundtable discussion on housing issues specific to Anne Arundel County.

Celebrating the Life of Geraldine Lippman
It’s incredible how impactful someone's life can be. I was humbled to attend the celebration of life for Ms. Geraldine Lippman, a woman who certainly left her mark on our community. An educator, a stalwart supporter of her community’s youth, and a civil rights activist for many years, Ms. Lippman held many leadership positions in her church and the community.
Following her celebration of life, I had the opportunity to speak at the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center, an institution dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of Wiley H. Bates High School. For over thirty years thirty, Wiley H. Bates was the only high school for African American students in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County; Ms. Lippman graduated in 1962. Ms. Lippman, known by many as Ms. Gerri, left an indelible mark on the community, shaping, and enhancing the lives of those around her, and will be greatly missed.
Endorsing Mike Rogers for Congress
As we strive to continue helping our fellow citizens, I'm thrilled to endorse a public servant who shares my service vision. Mike Rogers is a dedicated and creative problem solver who routinely sacrifices his time and resources to help those with the least. With over 30 years of public service, including time in the Army, retiring as a Colonel, and service in the Marine Corps, he has consistently shown his dedication to our country and county. As a fellow veteran, I appreciate the commitment Mike has brought to the forefront for issues that matter to us all. His ability to work with leaders from different political belief systems is critical for success as a legislator. But more importantly, he's a friend who has always stood by me in the trenches to get work done.
Maryland's 3rd Congressional District would do well under his leadership, and I was happy to canvass in the rain, sleet, and snow in support of Mike Rogers for Congress.
Black History Month Celebrations at the Library
West African drummers, African dance through the decades, Black author talks, exploring Black artists, movie showings, crafts, and so much more will be featured at the various branches of the Anne Arundel County Public Library during Black History Month! Find activities HERE.

A Day On, Not a Day Off, MLK Day of Service
“The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.” - Coretta Scott King
Every year, on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King’s National Day of Service means “a day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is an important time for volunteerism. People from all over the country unite to make communities more equitable. Dr. King believed we could achieve this community, but he knew we needed significant changes in how things work and fought for those changes. His actions inspire us to make a real difference. As the sole federal holiday designated as a national day of service, MLK Day of Service encourages all Americans to volunteer their time to enhance their communities. You can find some ideas for volunteering HERE. How will you give back to your communities this MLK Day of Service?

Supporting our Military Families
I was proud to attend a Veteran's Day breakfast with Governor Wes Moore on November 9th, where he signed two executive orders to honor and fulfill our duty to military families. Maryland is fortunate to have a Governor with military service experience, providing him with firsthand knowledge of the support our troops deserve. The "Leave No One Behind" principle resonates strongly in his commitment to ensuring that our military families receive the care and assistance they need.
Families Deserve Safe Housing
Quality, safe, and sustainable housing for families should always be the goal. Without it, parents suffer, children suffer, and the effects can be detrimental. I know this from experience, as my mother lost our home when I was in high school. The impact it had on me was substantial. In my recent Capital Gazette opinion column, I illustrate how this childhood experience and my work on the county council fuels my commitment to fostering an environment that helps families pursue quality housing. In the upcoming months, the County Council will examine a bill to address this issue from a policy perspective. Read more about this issue HERE. My colleague, Councilwoman Lisa Rodvien, representing Anne Arundel County's 6th District, also wrote an informative opinion column for the Capital Gazette about housing in our county that you can read HERE.
Upgrades at the Brooklyn Park Athletic Complex
The grand reopening of the Brooklyn Park Athletic Complex was a momentous occasion celebrated by the community. The partnership between the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), and the State of Maryland has resulted in significant enhancements, revitalizing the facility for the benefit of the entire community. Celebrating the Fort Meade Alliance
The Fort Meade Alliance 20th Anniversary Gala on October 21st was indeed a night to remember. I enjoyed connecting with Lieutenant General Haugh, the soon-to-be Commander of US Cyber Command and Director of the National Security Agency, and seeing many friendly faces. Congratulations to the Fort Meade Alliance on your 20th Anniversary! Since 2003 your organization has helped the Fort Meade region and the residents in many ways.
Faith and Blue Weekend
Faith and Blue Weekend strives to create more inclusive, safer, and stronger communities and neighborhoods by connecting law enforcement officers and residents through faith-based organizations. The Anne Arundel County Police Department hosted several Faith and Blue events around the County in October, and I was glad to attend the event at Heritage Community Church to connect with community members in such a meaningful way.
Remarkable Resource for Youth in Need
I was overjoyed to spend the afternoon of October 15th in Annapolis with the amazing Pastor Sheryl Menendez as she hosted the reopening of the H20 4. L.I.F.E. Clubhouse in Robinwood. This fantastic resource provides a safe place and essential support to youth in need by providing social activities and life skills designed to promote healthy social connections and reduce isolation. Leaders like Pastor Menendez are what make communities whole and wholesome.

Because of Her
In 1974, Sarah E. Carter, a well-loved and fully engaged community leader, won the Democratic Primary for Anne Arundel County Council by 13 votes. She went on to win the General Election and was the first, and is to date, the only Black woman to ever hold that position. Councilwoman Carter fought for her constituents and supported the underrepresented. She was a changemaker at a time when people who looked like her were rarely in positions of power. The hill she climbed to break that glass ceiling must have seemed insurmountable. But she persevered and showed people like me that what was once thought impossible was possible. She gave great hope to many, including me. Because of Sarah Carter, a shining example of leadership, I’m the third African American to serve on the County Council.
On Monday, August 28th, dozens of people gathered for a ceremony in front of Arundel Center North, a government building in Glen Burnie. The building was renamed in honor of Councilwoman Carter, and a new sign was unveiled. Those of us in attendance celebrated Ms. Carter’s life and legacy. Because of her, we’ve come so far.

Back-to-School Season
The 3rd Annual Block Party and Backpack Giveaway is in the books. We distributed over 1,000 backpacks with school supplies and provided hundreds of families with food. It was a fantastic day. I hope all our young learners have a safe, healthy, and happy school year!
Community Bike Ride
On a sunny August Saturday, I joined about 40 kids, 20 adults, and a host of car followers for a community bike ride event. Every child received a bike and helmet and enjoyed a visit with our new Sheriff, Everett Sesker. What a great way to celebrate peace and community!
Resource for Minority Business Owners
In mid-August, I had the opportunity to participate in a coalition working to bring information and opportunities to Maryland’s minority business owner community. Mr. Everett Browning Sr., Chairman of the Coalition of Minority Business Owners (COMBO), Maryland, led a diverse group of entrepreneurs to focus on the challenges and priorities Governor Moore is focused on. Learn about COMBO here.

FY24 Budget Moves Anne Arundel Forward
On June 14th, 2023, the Anne Arundel County Council passed the County Executive's Fiscal Year 2024 Budget. This bipartisan budget funds critical activities and enhances public education and safety, all while keeping our County competitive for workers and businesses. I want to thank our County Executive, Steuart Pittman, his hardworking and dedicated team, and most importantly, our fantastic council staff and the auditor's office.
This year’s budget puts us on a path to meet the needs of our public schools, law enforcement, and firefighters. I’m thankful that our residents are getting vital capital investments like the Brooklyn Park Community Center and the Severn-Harman Pedestrian Network. Celebrating Juneteenth
St. Mark United Methodist Church is a vibrant worship center in the First District that does terrific work in its Hanover community. I was honored to have supported a grant to replace a structure the church uses for the Luther O. Hebron Food Bank, which provides nutrition assistance to Anne Arundel families in need. On Saturday, June 17th, the church held its Juneteenth Festival, complete with games, refreshments, spoken word performances, and classic cars. I thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Juneteenth with congregants, their families, and friends.
Out in the Community
One of my favorite parts of this job is spending time in our neighborhoods and meeting up with community members. On June 10th, I started the day with my friend District 32 Delegate Mark Chang at the Rippling Ridge Community Block Party. There was plenty of fun, food, and family-friendly activities for everyone, and I enjoyed chatting with our neighbors in this vibrant community.
Later the same day, I headed to the 7th annual All Female Car Show at Meade Village Park in Severn, presented by Modified Chicks. Attendees enjoyed plenty of tricked-out cars, contests, games, food, and activities for the entire family.
My favorite part of the day had to be purchasing a delicious snowball from the 5-year-old and first-time vendor Joy at the “JoJo’s Snowballs” stand she had set up at the car show. What an outstanding young entrepreneur!
Meade Village Basketball Court Opens
I was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting and opening ceremony for the Meade Village Basketball Court managed by Tunnel Vision on June 4th. Trevelin Queen, an Indiana Pacers NBA player and former Anne Arundel County resident, provided remarks, and the annual Tunnel Vision League basketball tournament followed.
This project has been a labor of love, with many dedicated volunteers and workers playing essential roles. The talented Comacell Brown and members of the Meade Village community painted the unbelievable court mural. The Chase Your Dreams Initiative, Office of the County Executive, and Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks worked together to significantly upgrade the courts and parking lot.
I’m thrilled to see this community investment project come to fruition for all to enjoy.

Creating Fear at Bus Stops
For several months, a man in Severn has been showing up at an elementary school bus stop armed with an AR-15. He says it’s in protest of recently passed gun control laws. I spoke with WBALTV 11 News and area leaders, to denounce this abhorrent behavior. Learn more HERE.

I truly enjoyed crossing paths with Senator Pam Beidle, Senator Dawn Gile, Delegate Gary Simmons, and many others.
